Professional Development Committee

The Corporate Affairs and Professional Development Committee (CAPD for short) is committed to bringing opportunities for students to connect with local companies while building their job searching and professional skills. Our committee is jointly run by the VPs of Corporate Affairs and Professional Development. We spend our time bringing useful and fun events to campus, focusing on the employer’s perspective. People should join our committee because we work hard to plan the events as a strong team, but we never fail to have fun doing it!

The purpose of the SWE Professional Development committee is to help our collegiate members prepare for dynamic and exciting career opportunities in the STEM field. Throughout the school year, we host several events that focus on the challenges and rewards of transitioning from college to the workplace. These events include mock interviews, resume workshops, company tours, and information sessions, and networking socials. These events provide our members with the tools to improve their skills and differentiate themselves from the application pool. These events also benefit our corporate sponsors by offering opportunities to recruit ready and qualified potential employees.

Evening With Industry

Our annual Evening with Industry (EWI) dinner is the largest professional networking event hosted by our section and the Professional Development committee. For five years, we have connected companies from a variety of industries with potential future interns and employees over a delicious meal and an evening of networking. This past year we were thrilled to host 13 sponsoring companies and over 75 students.

Other Professional Development Activities

In addition to Evening with Industry, we also host several other events. Each fall we host a Resume Workshop in conjunction with the University of Utah Career Services. At this event, students can learn about how to differentiate their resumes and have their resume reviewed a counselor and their peers. Other events include company tours and panel discussions, which educate our members about the opportunities awaiting them after graduation.
