We are very excited that Salt Lake City is the host of a WE Local Conference this year, February 7 – 8 2020. WE Local is a scaled-down version of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) annual conference, which allows for a more intimate environment. From Keynote Speakers, a career fair, and breakout sessions to networking events, WE Local allows attendees to advance their education and careers. More information about the conference can be found here: https://welocal.swe.org/salt-lake-city/.

To help local members attend this conference, the U of U SWE section will be offering a scholarship to reimburse between 50% – 100% of registration fees for a limited number of student attendees of this conference. To receive this scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Be a paid SWE National member. Conference attendees must be paid members of National SWE in order to attend. If you are not a paying member but would like to be, please visit https://swe.utahclubs.org/becoming-a-swe-national-member-a-step-by-step-guide/. This will guide you through the process of becoming a member. Benefits of being a paid member include gaining access to scholarships and job opportunities, a vast network of online education, resume reviews, and the possibility of being funded to attend a Society of Women Engineers conference (such as WE Local).

Be a current University of Utah student (undergraduate, graduate, or PhD).

Attend at least ONE of three events, two of which will be held before the conference and one of which will be held after the conference. This requirement is written into our section by-laws. These events provide an opportunity to work on your professional image and network with corporate partners and other conference attendees. The exact times/rooms/dates of these events are still being solidified with companies.
The first event is a resume review with L3Harris and will be held on 1/29 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in WEB 2250. The second event is a digital branding workshop with Micron and will be held on 2/4 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in WEB 1250. The third event is a wild card event with BAE Systems and will be held on a weekday between 2/18 and 2/28 between 5:30 and 7:30 PM in room (TBD). There will be a sign-in and sign-out sheet at all events. If there are circumstances that barr you from attending at least one of these events, please email Alyssa at uofuswe@gmail.com to discuss your options.

Forward registration confirmation to uofuswe@gmail.com. This is for our records.

At the conference, provide proof of attendance. This could be attendance of a meetup for all U of U attendees (date and time TBD) for networking with current students and recent alumni, or a picture of yourself with conference badge/lanyard visible sent to uofuswe@gmail.com. Reimbursements cannot be provided without this proof.

It is important to note that this scholarship applies only to the student conference registration fee (includes the conference and career fair). Any additional costs for events, luncheons, tours, or other perks will not be covered by SWE.

If you are able to meet all of the above requirements, then please fill out an application here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSegThpmdhOkTrqm06-_Vf2Qm5eblyD_wx1_hCHDUwoPZ_akuA/viewform?usp=sf_link.

Applications will close on 1/17 at 6 PM. Decisions for amount of reimbursement will be emailed out on 1/20. Reimbursements will be sent out after the BAE Systems event. You must register for the conference on https://welocal.swe.org/salt-lake-city/ before it closes on 1/24.

Applications are open to current University of Utah students of any gender who are majoring in an engineering discipline (this includes every major in the College of Engineering and engineering majors in the College of Mines and Earth Sciences).

If you have any questions, please feel free to email uofuswe@gmail.com or uofuswepdc@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing your applications!
