Becoming a member of our leadership team is a fantastic way to be involved with SWE here on campus. As a member of leadership, you would have the opportunity to work with the College of Engineering, other SWE chapters, and our sponsors. To become a member of our leadership team, you first have to be nominated and either voted in or appointed to a position. Check out our list of positions to learn more about them!

Towards the middle of every fiscal year, we hold elections to vote in our next leadership team. Our process begins when potential leadership members are nominated to run for specific positions. Self nominations are allowed and highly encouraged!

Position Descriptions

Elected Positions

President

  • Preside over all official meetings, both general body and executive board meetings  
  • Serve as spokesperson for University of Utah SWE  
  • Responsible for completing four quarterly reports per fiscal year  
  • Manage the SWE Gmail account  
  • Oversee all committees (Social, Professional Development, Outreach) and officers, specifically advising the Social Media Director and the Department Representatives.  
  • Responsible for keeping section in good standing by submitting section reports/documents and participating in regional conference calls.  
  • Updating Google calendar with SWE events  
  • Maintain contact with Region by attending regional president’s calls and attending meetings at annual and regional conferences. President shall send a representative delegate if unable to attend a conference  
  • Oversee submissions of national and regional awards and SWE PDG grants

Vice President of Corporate Affairs

  • Maintain list of current company or other external/internal contacts and update them regularly
  • Solicit donations from local engineering companies using the sponsorship packet to meet the budget requirements
  • Recruit professionals for all SWE events requiring sponsors (Mock Interviews, Panels, EWI, etc)
  • Keep the sponsorship packet up to date and distribute early in the year.
  • Plan and initiate alternative fundraising events
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President

Vice President of Professional Development

  • Create and oversee a committee of members to initiate and help plan events.
  • Organize primary events including “Evening with Industry”, company tours, mock interviews, resume reviews, and other events related to professional development of students.
  • Create, organize and maintain a resume book of SWE members for the current year to be given to sponsors upon request
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President.

Vice President of Outreach

  • Create and oversee a committee of members to initiate and help plan events
  • Organize primary events including “Girl Scout Night” and “Day in the Life” each semester
  • Look for opportunities to engage engineering modules at local schools, Girl Scout troops, and other community organizations
  • Communicate events with the College of Engineering and provide support, when asked, to College of Engineering Outreach events  
  • Execute the SWE sister’s mentoring program  
  • Submit SWE Program Development grants for events  
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President.

Vice President of Social Activities

  • Create and oversee a committee of members to initiate and help plan events.  
  • Plan monthly social activities in conjunction with general member meetings  
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President.

Vice President of Communications (New!)

  • Responsible for sending out the weekly newsletter.
  • Maintain a list of contacts for student clubs, alumni, other SWE sections, and other external communications.
  • Approve fliers and external communications to maintain a professional image.
  • Communicate with College of Engineering and/or other building administrators to ensure fliers/blurbs are sent out in advance for distribution.
  • Maintain and enforce national SWE branding standards.
  • Promotion timelines and implementation.
  • Provide website content.
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President.

Treasurer

  • Manage the finances of the University of Utah SWE section in conjunction with the College of Engineering
  • Serve as a liaison between the University of Utah SWE Section and ASUU’s General Assembly for funding issues
  • Submit Treasurer's Report to the National SWE headquarters at the end of the fiscal year
  • Assist President in preparing the quarterly region reports
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President

Secretary

  • Take notes at all leadership meetings based on agendas received from the President
  • Send meeting minutes with a tasks summary to leadership within 2 days of meetings
  • Collect event blog posts after each event from responsible committee
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President

Appointed Positions

You still need to apply for appointed positions, because they are still voted in as part of the approval process. The President will pick a candidate they feel is appropriate for the job and then SWE national members will get the opportunity to vote them in.

Social Media Director

  • Manage all updates and postings to the SWE blog, Facebook, and Instagram
  • Make announcements on the Facebook and blog within 24 hours of request. Social Media Director must make arrangement if unable to complete this within 24 hours.  
  • Post engaging content on the Facebook a minimum of two times weekly. Examples include but are not limited to sharing society level SWE posts, College of Engineering and Career services announcements, and articles on women in STEM  
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President.
  • Note: The Social Media Director stays independent of the of the Vice President of Communications responsibilities to ensure proper attention is given to the website and other social media.

Department Representatives (One for each department within College of Engineering, one for College of Mines and Earth Sciences, and one for Graduate Students)

  • Create points of contact in individuals department in advisors or other faculty.  
  • Send fliers, event information and opportunities for students to point of contact  
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated by the President  
  • Make public announcements within classes and graduate seminars pertaining to SWE events.
