Outreach Committee
The University of Utah SWE section works to advance women in engineering. A large part of that goal is to introduce younger girls to STEM. Our section plans and hosts several large events during the year and our members also volunteer for outreach activities organized by other groups. In the past year, we have been increasing our outreach activities to include more partnership events and small scale outreach, such as visiting individual Girl Scout troops and after school clubs at local public schools.
Activities and Events
This upcoming year we will be hosting four large-scale events, as well as volunteering with the Girl Scouts of Utah and the College of Engineering. Our large-scale events, Girl Scout Night Jr., Girl Scout Night, and Day in the Life (two in the fall and one in the spring) are a great way to introduce younger girls to the idea that STEM fields can be fun, exciting career paths. Our Girl Scout Nights offer girls K-12 a variety of hands-on activities like learning to program a robot, making liquid nitrogen ice cream, building a basic circuit, and participating in sustainable egg-drop competitions. During our ‘Day in The Life’ events, local high school girls shadow our members for a day, tour engineering labs, and get valuable advice from professionals at a special luncheon panel.
We are proud to have reached over 250 girls in our large events this past year, as well as over 50 volunteers. We plan to reach over 300 girls next year through our events. Our main addition will be another Fall ‘Day in The Life’ event, to accommodate the 50-person waitlist encountered last year. For more detailed descriptions of events and how you can get involved, please contact Jessica at outreach.uofuswe@gmail.com.
